Virgin Islands Celebrities…who’s next to you on that barstool?
The Virgin Islands are so unassuming….beautiful, easy, simple. Perhaps that’s what draws the world’s rich and famous–the guarantee of a simple life in a gorgeous place where you can “be as you are.” In the Virgin Islands, celebrities are as common as palm trees swaying in the breeze.
If you’re heading to the Virgin Islands in search of celebrities–don’t. Island residents closely guard the privacy of the famous and let them mingle among the locals without bothering them. But if you keep you’re eyes open, you may be surprised by who’s sitting on the barstool beside you.
The Virgin Islands are home to many famous names and faces—some were lucky enough to be born here. From local Virgin Islands celebrities like Foxy Callwood, to world famous actors, musicians, business magnates and athletes,the Virgin Islands offers everyone the same thing–paradise found.
Did you know actor, director and producer Kelsey Grammer, or more famously “Dr. Frasier Crane” on TV’s Cheers and Frasier, is a proud son of St. Thomas? His father was a musician and owner of a coffee shop and a bar & grill called Greer’s Place. Kelsey left St. Thomas at age 12, after his father’s death.
Although country singer Kenny Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he definitely found his musical inspiration and home in the Virgin Islands. As one of the most famous Virgin Islands celebrities, he has homes on St. John and sings about the islands and their amazing beauty in many of his songs. His wedding to actress Renee Zellweger occurred on Peter Bay (near Trunk Bay) on St. John. The music video for his song, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, was filmed on and around Jost Van Dyke at Ivan’s Stress Free Bar, off Sandy Spit, and other famous locations in the British Virgin Islands.
San Antonio Spurs basketball superstar Tim Duncan is another product of the United States Virgin Islands. He was born in Christiansted, a town in St. Croix and studied at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School, where he started to play basketball on the 9th grade.
Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson and Morgan Freeman are two examples of prominent personalities taking residence in the British Virgin Islands. The English business magnate Richard Branson has an estate on Necker Island, an island which he personally owns, while Mr. Freeman has several properties in Virgin Gorda, where you might see him on the dock aboard his sailboat at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor.
Erase the thought that the only famous Virgin Islands residents are the majestic green sea turtles, schools of angel fish and elegant rays that greet you while snorkeling their lush coral reefs. The islands hide more famous people and celebrities than you may have originally thought.
