Bomba’s Surfside Shack
A lot of beach bars on Tortola hold Full Moon Parties, but Bomba’s Surfside Shack at the West End of Cappoons Bay is the mother of all full moon parties in the entire British Virgin Islands. The celebration is notorious in part, thanks to the shack’s wild and unsheltered ambience, but the real star of the show is their magic mushroom tea. If you get the opportunity to visit Bomba’s Surfside Shack during a full moon, you’ll quickly learn why Bomba’s Surfside Shack and its unique lunar festivities draw tourists from all over the world.
Back in 1976, Bomba Callwood decided to open up a small bar on the stretch of Cappoons Bay’s white sand beach. Having virtually no money, he used driftwood, broken surfboards, old corrugated tin roofing, and anything else he could scrounge up; whether it was a gift from friends or the Caribbean Sea. The end result? Bomba’s Surfside Shack–a shanty of a bar that’s completely full of funk.
Bomba’s Surfside Shack quickly became the A-spot and hangout for surfers and tourists alike. The expanse of little rooms, plywood bars and shady spots are great for sitting back and relaxing with friends while watching surfers at the only decent surf site on the island.
Along with beer and rum punch, Bomba is known to serve the most mouth-watering grilled ribs, corn on the cob, and bar-b-que straight from the “Bomba-que” pit. The Shack is still an evolving project, which is constantly getting bigger, but never fear–the “decorations” of graffiti, faded pictures, and panties and bras hanging from the ceiling are still the bar’s main theme.
Bomba’s Surfside Shack Full Moon Party
In 1989, Bomba decided to hold a full moon party, a Dionysian-esque tradition which continues today. Word of wild times quickly spread and Bomba’s Surfside Shack Full Moon Parties started drawing in large crowds-the biggest was a near 900 headcount! To cater to this surge of party goers, Bomba expanded the Shack across the road from the original beachside bar to what is affectionately called the “Back Yard.” With a large bar and a bandstand where some of the best local musicians rock out during an all-nighter, patrons have more room for dancing, limin’ and simply have a great time!
What’s so special about Bomba’s Surfside Shack Full Moon Parties? Well, some will say its the magic mushroom tea and punch. These two concoctions are said to be very potent, and can amazingly separate girls from their clothes!
Tortola is not only home to heavenly beaches and great snorkeling spots, but also to many unique cultural events and festivities..and Bomba’s Surfside Shack Full Moon Party definitely sits among the top of the list.
